A Healthy You! Chronic Disease Self-Management

Anyone who wants to learn how to better manage their symptoms are welcome to attend this six-week workshop, starting on October 18 and running until November 29 with no class on Thanksgiving, at the Auburn YMCA. The class is free to YMCA members and $25 to the general public, and includes social support, a reference book, and tools to help you take control of your chronic conditions. Anyone welcome, 18 and older, but people with ongoing health conditions and caregivers may find the most benefit. Topics include working with health care providers, communication, better sleep, pain and fatigue , making decisions, action planning, better eating and physical activity.

Murder Mystery Fundraiser Dinner

The Cayuga Community Health Network is hosting a Murder Mystery Dinner as its fall fundraiser. A theater company will lead the event at The Point on Sand Beach on Oct. 20. The cost is $70 per ticket or $600 for a table of 10 which includes a three-course dinner and a ghoulish mystery to solve.

The menu is so good it's scary: A mixed green salad, oven roasted turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, baked eggplant parmesan, penne pasta with marinara sauce, and dessert.

Landlord Workshop: Back To Basics

This year's Landlord Workshop is for new, prospective, or few-unit property owners, and it's call Back to Basics. While anyone is welcome to attend, the materials presented is going to focus on the basics of being a landlord - tenant screening, business plan, and other basic responsibilities that will help operate an effective investment property. Seasoned landlords, too many benefit. 

The $15 registration fee includes lunch, resource binder, flash drive and a copy of NOLO's Landlord's Legal Guide.

Cultural Competencies: Working with LGBTQ+ populations

The Q Center will present a cultural competency workshop that cover the basics of sexuality and gender, statistics, health disparities, and misconceptions around the LGBTQ+ community. Facilitators will offer suggestions on best practices working with the community. During the presentation, the participants have an opportunity to engage in several activities that provide opportunities for questions or discussions that could explore biases, privilege, and microaggressions.

This workshop is provided with support from the Human Services Coalition of Cayuga County, and its Adult & Community Task Group.

Smoking Cessation Training for Community Workers and Health Providers

Do you work with pregnant women or new moms who smoke? Dr. Beth Gero is leading a training to give tools to community workers, healthcare providers, and health educators in helping their clients quit or reducing smoking. 

Details are being set for location, but this three-hour course will take place in the morning, Wednesday, June 27, from 9 am to noon, at the Holiday Inn in Auburn.

Continuing education credits will be offered: 3 credits are offered for CME and CEUs, as well as credits for AARC respiratory professionals. 

This program is brought to the community as a collaboration between the Cayuga Community Health Network and the Cayuga County Health Department.

Microaggressions presented by Latesha Fussell

Latesha Fussell, the director of Campus Life for Diversity and Inclusion for Wells College, will lead a discussion about microaggressions. She will introduction the topic, how to recognize these insults and how to respond to them. 

This discussion will run from noon to 1 pm Tuesday, May 1, at Cayuga Community College. It's organized by the Adult and Community Task Group of the Human Services Coalition.

Inspiring Lasting Change with Cheryl Martin

Cheryl Martin will share techniques of Motivational Interviewing to help you inspire change among clients by helping them find their own reasons to strive for results. Anyone is welcome to join us, but people who assist clients in adopting changes may find the most benefit.

Registration starts at 8:45 am, with the program running from 9 to 11 am.

 

Cheryl Martin has a BSN in Nursing, MA in Psychology and 46 years of experience as an RN. She has a Trauma Certificate from the University of Buffalo, School of Social Work. She is a Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor and a NYS OASAS Certified SBIRT trainer.  Cheryl is a member of Motivational Interviewing Network Trainers since 2004 and a Motivational Interviewing Assessment Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency trainer for the NIDA Blending Initiative. Cheryl has 15 years of managerial experience guiding and caring for both adolescents and adults on an OASAS inpatient rehabilitation unit. As well, Cheryl has coached and supported the Monroe County Nurse Family Partnership as they seek to build trauma responsive services and motivational interviewing skills that strengthen new mothers’ parenting and enhance infant/toddler health and development.  Cheryl has developed curriculum and delivered training and/or coaching to schools, human service and health care providers on a variety of topics including: trauma and trauma responsive services, motivational interviewing (MI), person-centered planning, parenting, co-occurring disorders, and substance use disorders.
Cheryl is currently working as an Integrated Health Trainer and Clinical Consultant for Coordinated Care Services, Inc. Prior to CCSI/MCOMH, she served as Nurse Specialist at Catholic Family Center and as Manager at Park Ridge Chemical Dependency Inpatient Rehabilitation for substance use disorders.

Cayuga Community Health Network is partnering with LifeSpan Therapies to bring A Healthy You! Chronic Disease Self-Management to King Ferry. The program runs from 10 am to noon Mondays, Sept. 30 through Oct. 30. at Lifespan, 8842 State Route 90N, King Ferry. Anyone 18 and older is welcome to attend this free program, but people with ongoing health conditions and caregivers may particularly benefit. 

Topics include relaxation, mind-body scanning, healthy eating, working with health care providers, medication usage, decision making process, physical activity, better sleep, and pain & fatigue management.
