“Point-of-sale tobacco marketing is a major cause of teen smoking in the United States and should be banned.” – Researchers from the Stanford University Medical School
Youth are 3x more sensitive to tobacco marketing than adults.
Youth are more influenced to smoke by tobacco marketing than by peer pressure.
75% of youth shop at convenient stores at least once a week and are
routinely exposed to retail tobacco marketing.
Each day, more than 4,000 youth try smoking and another 2,000 become regular daily smokers. Of the youth that smoke 85% prefer three of the most heavily marketed brands – Marlboro, Camel and Newport.
If we want to stop the influence that tobacco has on our youth we need restrictions on tobacco marketing and retailers! Policies are needed to remove tobacco products and marketing out of consumer view and to control the number, type and location of tobacco retailers.
